Question about the movie "Four Brothers" involving Jack?

I was a little confused at the dinner scene when Evelyn held out her hands and said she knew bad things happened to him, but he's safe now....what bad things happened and why did she have her hands out like that? I know it doesn't go into too much detail, but just does anyone have any idea on what probably happened? Thoughts?
