Why do filipinos claim they are Pacific Islanders?

I've always thought they were Asian but a guy said he was Pacific Islander NOT ASIAN, and that he looks nothing like "those" Asians? I dont get it... Can someone please fill me in on the "TRUTH" of what Filipinos are, Thanks.
